October marks Black History Month here in the United Kingdom and so we have put together a gallery featuring some of the most prominent Black figures across the Sonic Editions site.

Black History Month was proposed initially in the United States in 1969 by a group of Black educators at the Kent State University in Ohio. The following year, the month-long celebration of Black people and culture took place from early January until the end of February. Within 6 years, Black History Month was observed across the US in educational centres both great and small and was officially recognised by the President at the time, Gerald Ford the same year.

The United Kingdom began its history of Black History Month in 1987 when Ghanaian journalist and activist Akyaaba Addai-Sebo began organising the event. His education in the US from 1970 onwards as well as his witnessing of the American Black History Month, inspired him to do so after he moved to London in 1984. His vision to celebrate and highlight African, Caribbean and Asian people’s unmistakable contribution to the UK’s cultural, economical and political landscape has been celebrated ever since.

Our Black History Month gallery features Black men and women who have all had an enormous impact on the world. Whether they be political leaders fighting racial inequality such as Martin Luther King or Nelson Mandela, multi platinum selling musical artists like Public Enemy, Diana Ross and Jimi Hendrix or athletes breaking the limits and records of human performance like Muhammad Ali, Serena Williams and Jackie Robinson. These are just a few of the many names and faces you will see in the gallery…
