As a significant cultural icon and one of the best selling musicians of all time, George Michael was always destined for great things. He was the leading pop star of the 1980s and 90s, winning a Grammy for Best Album of the Year for his debut album, ‘Faith’.

Michael’s career quickly accelerated with the formation of the band Wham! Born in North London, Michael befriended soon-to-be band-mate Andrew Ridgeley and by 1982 they had released their first album. With their youthful good looks and catchy, Motown-influenced sound Wham! soon developed a devoted fan base. Establishing themselves as a global act, Wham! made history in 1985 by being the first western pop music act to tour in China, generating world wide coverage.

As the lead vocalist and main songwriter, Michael emerged as the star of the group. It was not long before he broke out on his own. His debut solo album ‘Faith’ was released in 1987 and stayed at number one for 12 weeks. It was later awarded Album of the Year in 1989.

Michael made headlines throughout his career not just for music but for drug controversy, his sexual orientation and later when he had passed away his generous philanthropic acts. George Michel passed away in his home in 2016.
